After many rumors and leaks the new Olympus OM-D E-M5 Micro Four Thirds Camera has finally been announced. The OM-D E-M5 features retro styling of the original half-frame 35mm PEN but with high-end modern functionality. The body of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 also features magnesium alloy construction and the same dust and splash-proofing that is found on the Olympus E-5 making it the first micro-four-thirds camera to feature this rugged ability.

The OM-D E-M5 has a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor that is capable of ISO settings up to 25600 for low-light shooting. The rear tilting 3-inch display is of the OLED touch variety, which provides a very fast refresh rate and a wider viewing angle than a comparable LCD. The eye-level electronic viewfinder is built into the camera, so there’s no need to add an external one. It features a 1.44-megapixel resolution, 18mm eye point, and a 1.15x magnification factor. The camera can also record High Definition QuickTime video at 1080i60 resolution with H.264 compression at bitrates up to 20Mbps.

The Olympus OM-D E-M5 will be available in black or silver in body only format or with the 14-42mm lens or the new 12-50mm lens. The camera will be available in April and is now available for pre-order, see the following configuration options below.

Nikon D800 & D800E

After long speculation and many rumors Nikon has finally announced the new Nikon D800 and D800E 36MP full-frame DSLR cameras. The pixel count of the long-awaited replacement for the Nikon D700 means it also trumps the D3X as the highest resolution camera in Nikon’s lineup. As well as the standard version of the D800, Nikon has also revealed a more expensive model the D800E that will be free from the effects of an anti-aliasing filter. Aimed at studio and landscape professionals the D800E should theoretically begin to rival medium format digital equipment in terms of resolution.

Both the Nikon D800 and the D800E will be available in late March with the D800 costing $2999.95 and the D800E costing $3,299.95. Both are now available for pre-order at Amazon.com and B&H Photo, see below for pre-order information.

Features:

  • Extreme resolution 36.3-megapixel FX-format (35.9 x 24.0mm) CMOS sensor
  • Full 1080p HD broadcast quality video and minimized rolling shutter
  • View simultaneous Live View output on external monitors and record uncompressed video via HDMI terminal
  • Multi-Area Full HD D-Movie Video Recording Mode
